Cranbrook Community Dance’s events and lessons are places of learning, sociability, respect, and kindness.
Cranbrook Community Dance prioritizes making all community members feel welcome, included, and safe.
Following are some guidelines and standards that everyone attending must adhere to:
Cranbrook Community Dance’s spaces are for everyone regardless of sex, race, orientation, physical ability, religion, age, or dance experience;
Rhythm City will not tolerate harassment of any kind. This includes unwelcome sexual language and inappropriate touching;
Anyone can ask anyone else to dance regardless of dance role, level, or experience;
Anyone can decline a dance without obligation or excuse. We are all here to have fun. Sometimes we want to dance, sometimes we want to take a break. There are a million reasons someone may decline a dance and it is important to treat that decision with respect;
Everyone is here to have a good time, and a lot of that involves dancing. Don’t take it personally if someone doesn’t feel like chatting for long;
Have care for the safety and comfort of your partner and those around you on the dance floor. Collisions happen. Following a collision, ensure that everyone involved is okay. Air steps (aerials) on the social floor are unsafe and will not be tolerated;
We invite you to take an active role in creating and fostering a safe and welcoming environment at all Cranbrook Community Dance events:
Inclusivity: We encourage our experienced members to help new members feel welcome: say hi, offer a dance, and be friendly. We also encourage our new members to remember that we were all beginners once;
Safety: If you witness, experience, or hear of an instance of harassment or something that made you or another participant uncomfortable: we want to know about it. There are a number of things you can do:
- talk to Evan or Helena;
- talk to a friend who can approach one of these people or give you some support.
- send an email to cranbrookcommunitydance@gmail.com letting us know of your concerns.
Cranbrook Community Dance will attend with care and discretion to all concerns brought forward, according to the needs and wishes of the concerned party and the severity of the concern. We may take any action we deem appropriate, including warning the offender or expulsion from the event or class with no refund.
We welcome and encourage feedback on how we are doing in our lessons, our events, and our postings. If you have something to share, we welcome you to share with us.
